Silicone rubber developed during the 2nd World War is low in mechanical strength but is a special type of heat resistant rubber that can be used as an elastomer in a wide range of temperature of from –60°C to +230°C.nIts chemical structure differs from conventional organic rubbers in that the main chain is –Si–O– making it of the same composition as rocks. At present, vinyl silicone rubber of which a part of the methyl radicals linked with Si is replaced with vinyl consists of the majority. However, phenyl silicone rubber favorable in cold resistance, silicone fluoride rubber favorable in chemical resistance and dimethyl silicone rubber that readily dissolves in solvents are also available. Features consist of excellent weatherability, electrical characteristics, water repellency, non-tackiness, high elasticity, low compression set and creep strength in addition to heat and cold resistance. Defects are that it is weak in tear strength, susceptible to high heat water vapor and that it burns, however, heat resistant aqueous silicone rubber and non-flammable silicone rubber meeting UL Standards with these defects modified have been developed as of recent.

UR SHEET

URETHANE RUBBER SHEET

Urethane rubber with the highest Young’s modulus among all rubbers and superior in abrasion resistance can be made into rubber endowed with individual properties by means of the difference in use of polyester or polyether for the linear alkyl chain that forms the base, type of isocyanate to extend the chain and type of crosslinking agent.
Also, a casting type and a solid type for roll kneading/press molding as well as a thermoplastic type for injection molding or extrusion can be made depending on how the reaction is promoted at time of manufacture. In general, polyester rubber excels in tensile strength and is favorable in adhesion with iron cores whereas water resistance and the feature of being strong against repeated loading can be seen with polyether rubber. The crosslinking agent in the case of the casting type normally uses amine whereas diol is used in order to obtain rubber of especially low hardness. Isocyanate crosslinking agent and fillers are added for the crosslinking of the solid type by which rubber high in strength is obtained as well as sulfur and peroxide crosslinking, which are favorable in working stability, can be done. Features common of urethane rubber consist of high tensile strength coming from the high Young’s modulus and the capability to retain high elasticity even at high hardness where other rubbers lose their elasticity, and excellent weatherability, ozone resistance, oil resistance, cold resistance and abrasion resistance.
Defects are that it is weak to heat and that the limit of service temperature is 70°C as well as that it is large in heat generation and weak in repeated deformation at high loading and in the points of excessiveness in compression set and elongation set. Applications consist of feed rolls of iron mills, paper mills, textiles, etc., wire pulleys, solid tires, die pads, washing machine star wheels, couplings, anti-vibration pads, etc.
